JMI organises regional seminar on Investor Education in collaboration with SEBI & MCX

Significance of investor education for the students and youth was discussed at a regional seminar organised by Department of Commerce and Business Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) to celebrate World Investor Week from 30th September 2019 to 5th October 2019 . About 200 students from various Faculties, Departments and Centers of the university participated in the ‘Regional Seminar on Investor Education’ to mark the occasion. The seminar was organised in collaboration with two premier institutions viz, Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) of India Ltd. This was the second such seminar held to provide valuable insights about Financial Markets, Commodity Derivatives Market and investor education. The seminar was chaired by Prof. Ravinder Kumar, Head, Department of Commerce and Business Studies, and Co-chaired by Dr.Naseeb Ahmad, Student’s Advisor. The resource persons, Mr. Sanjay Gakhar Head, North India, MCX and Ms. Kanchan Yadav, AGM, SEBI, NRO deliberated upon various issues related to investor education, financial markets and commodity derivatives markets. In his Welcome Address, Prof Ravinder Kumar, Head, Department of Commerce and Business Studies, discussed the significance of investor education for the students and youth. The seminar commenced with a detailed presentation by Research Scholars; Ms. Aashima Gaba and Mr. Anirudh Sahai, covering various aspects of investor education e.g., scope of investment, money market instruments, financial planning, securities market, exchange support system etc. The presentation was followed by a ‘Quiz on Investment awareness & Financial Market’ in which hundreds of students participated in two halls. Mr. Sanjay Gakhar-Head North India, MCX, made a detailed and thoughtful presentation on Investor Awareness and Commodity Derivatives and discussed various issues related to the functioning and investment opportunities in Commodity Derivatives which enabled the participants to understand the intricacies of derivatives market. Ms Kanchan Yadav, AGM, SEBI, NRO, discussed in length about the role and functioning of SEBI as market regulator with a special emphasis on Investor education and protection. She emphasize on the need of understanding the rights of investors and support available to common/ individual investors. Dr. Naseeb Ahmad, Advisor, Subject Association presented the vote of thanks acknowledging the support and assistance provided by SEBI & MCX in organizing the seminar and thanked the resource persons from both the Institutions and urged them to extend support for similar events in future. The seminar was successful in building a foundation for the students and young investors and creating interest among them to explore different avenues of investment and helped them to understand the various issues involved in the investment process.
